It’s just one of those days. Whether there’s just something ‘off’ or you just don’t feel your best, you just want one thing – to be happy. Firstly, it’s okay to feel how you do right now – don’t get yourself down and chin up 😊 But today, I’m sharing 20 effective and badass (if I don’t say so myself) ways of feeling happy today! Enough talk, let’s just jump straight into this one… time to start feeling great!
1. Put your phone down
Seriously do it. Instead of looking at your phone every 23 seconds, wondering if you got a text or any other form of notification – just check it every 5 hours or so. Don’t fear, your text will still be there. But you’ll feel a lot happier when you don’t have to obey the attention-grabbing notification.
If you really can’t put your phone down/away – just put it on ‘do not disturb mode’ which can be located by simply swiping up on your iPhone to reveal your control centre and tapping the little ‘moon’ icon. This will prevent your phone from making any noises or vibrations unless it is a call from someone in your favourites list.
All of a sudden, you won’t have the urge to look at 20 different overly cute relationship pictures uploaded by that person you have a crush on and you won’t have to look at that one cool friend who seems to travel more than you could ever afford. You can just enjoy your own life and be more present instead – seems like a pretty good trade off.
2. Go for a walk
Nothing else solves anxiety, fears and stresses like a good, long walk. This is for two reasons.
1. It clears your mind and gives you time to really think. The walk will give you plenty of time to figure out solutions to your problems and will even give you new ideas.
2. It gives you a chance to zone out if need be. You can stick in a pair of headphones and zone out from the world. Once you find yourself back into a state of joy or calm, you can deal with the problems in a much more strategic and effective way.
Actually, now come to think about it, there are three reasons.
3. After a long walk, you might be quite tired or even peckish. So you can either look forward to a nap or food – both of which, the thought of, will make you instantly happier. Hmm… food. 😍
3. Acknowledge and appreciate the weather
Whether you’re enjoying your walk or sat inside, look toward the magnificent sky and just bask in the beauty of the weather. If it’s sunny, everyone would agree that our moods can tip into the happier, more positive spectrum – but funny enough, if it’s raining – we can still find ourselves feeling calm, relaxed and focused. I’ve actually discovered something quite amazing about the rain that I wrote about here.
4. Smile at strangers
Because it’ll make you and that stranger smile more that day… and nothing makes a human being happier than knowing that they have affected someone’s mood for the better – even in a time of their own unhappiness.
5. Talk to a stranger
Go the extra step – if you’ve smiled at them, the chances are, they’ve smiled back. If so, you’ve unofficially been given permission to just talk to them. Breaking past your comfort zone and talking to a complete stranger is not only easier than you imagine, but it will also give you a small sense of accomplishment and fulfilment – which is enough to really make you happier.
6. Call a loved one
Connecting randomly with your spirit-enhancing friends and family will bring both you and the person you’ve called great pleasure and joy. This could be to simply ask about the other person’s day or to say thank you for everything they’ve ever done for you or to pleasantly reminisce about old times. There’s just nothing quite like talking about that time you sang Justin Bieber and had a push up competition.
7. Watch this: Address is Approximate
Because it’s possibly one of my favourite videos of all time. A quirky, fun and surprisingly emotionally impactful short film that never fails to make me smile. Give it a watch.
8. Tidy your work space
In the incredible book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying, Marie Kondo says that “From the moment you start tidying, you will be compelled to reset your life. As a result, your life will start to change.” (This is one of my favourite quotes of all time). So, let’s change… let’s tidy that work space!
9. Read the Good News Network
Watching and reading bad news can be tiring and could even be one of the catalysts for your bad mood in the first place. If you want to change your news reading habits, but want to taper off rather than just stop reading at all, then maybe it’s worth checking out the smile-inducing Good News Network. Read two stories and you’ll quickly notice that big grin on your face.
10. Do your hair
Because you deserve to rock a sweet look! Heck, now’s your chance to try a new hairstyle out – maybe your temporary sadness will cause you to create your new favourite look 😎
11. Write a letter to the future you
There is a great service known as futureme.org where by you can send yourself a letter in the future. This is actually a great way of practicing gratitude (through the process of writing the letter) and delayed gratification (by being aware that you are going to have to wait for the reward). I’ve actually done just that and written a letter to myself openly so you can see an example and maybe try it out yourself!
12. Learn something new
I’d start by watching ‘History of Japan’ by the hilarious Bill Wurtz. This way you can both gain knowledge and laugh a lot in the process. Otherwise, learning something new can put you in the discovery state which can fill you with excitement and positive energy. Give it a try!
13. Make a list of ten things you love about your life
It’s totally okay to brag, no one is looking. But seriously, take a moment and really appreciate what is so great about your life. This can be anything from ‘having great friends’ to ‘I’m constantly progressing’ – which I know you are if you’re on this site 😉
14. Grab your favourite book
Because there is that one book that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The book that makes you either think positive about the future or grateful of the present.

15. Put on some new threads
Now this isn’t me giving you permission to just go out and spend money on something fancy – instead this is a chance for you to invest in something practical like a new hat for the increasing colder weather or better still a brand new t-shirt that expresses you’re happy state, like this badass one!
16. Write an action plan
We’ve all got that one big goal that’s been sitting in our head, waiting for something to happen. Let’s get it out of your head and make it a reality! Make an action plan – start by writing down that goal and then breaking it down into three actionable steps. Trust me when I say it’ll make your day!
17. Tick something off your to-do list
Getting just one item off your to-do list can give you a great sense of accomplishment – one, which will end up being the catalyst for a series of productive events. As your ticking items away, you’ll notice yourself smiling and you’ll quickly be reminded of how much of a badass person you really are… and that’s the kind of confidence that make you happy for life!
18. Grab a warm drink
Holding a hot drink can even make you friendlier. At the University of Colorado Boulder, a fun experiment showed that “participants who briefly held a cup of hot (versus iced) coffee judged a target person as having a ‘warmer’ personality (generous, caring)”. So pouring yourself a warm drink, whether it be a great green tea or my favourite kind of white hot chocolate – it’s going to make you ‘warmer’.
19. Relax effectively
Because sometimes you just need to. Put on your favourite album, clear your area, lie down, grab that warm drink and enjoy your peaceful, relaxed state. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out the perfect relaxing, wind-down routine which has made me feel so much more effective and calm throughout my days 🙏
20. Get in the flow state
This is the state in which you can get loads done with ease. Time flies by and everything feels great. I’ve got a playlist to help encourage and optimise my flow state which I usually access by simply writing down three steps to complete one large goal I have and then just working through it. Much like Casey Neistat says: ‘Persistence and endurance will make you omnipotent.’
BONUS: For people who want to feel great everyday!
My little happiness secret is something I carry with me all the time. It’s the Five Minute Journal.
In it, you just spend 5 minutes (thus the name) a day writing about the things you’re grateful for, what would make the day great and your daily affirmations. My favourite thing is that each page also has a section for the evening where you write the amazing things that happened and what you could have done to make the day even better.
This has made me so grateful for all the little moments in the day and best of all, you can just go back to a page to see what made that day great, giving you another reason to smile.
For example, as I write this, I’m currently looking at the 21st January that has a note of ‘Japanese hip-hop’ in it. I’ll let you discover that one for yourself…
psst, listen to Budamunk… you can thank me later.
Now it’s go time! Pick whichever one of these appeal to you most and see how you feel after 😊 Let me know in the comments which you chose or whether you have any other ideas – I’m curious to hear what you guys think!
